For fibre-optic specialist Allinq, Student Consultant researched the Dutch energy sector and mapped out concrete opportunities and strategic options.

Situation

After the fibre-optic rollout

Allinq is one of the larger players in the Netherlands in the large-scale rollout of fibre optics, with a focus on the central and northern Netherlands. The company specialises in building and managing telecom networks. At the time, the rollout was expected to be largely complete within a few years. Allinq therefore wanted to explore the opportunities in the Dutch energy market.

Allinq wanted insight into the role it can play in the energy transition and where the company's competencies are best put to use. Without this exploration, Allinq risks the knowledge and workforce capacity it has built up being underused in the future.

Approach

Exploratory research into the energy sector

  1. Mapping the value chainThrough desk research and conversations with internal and external stakeholders, the entire chain of parties, activities and barriers to entry in the Dutch energy sector was mapped.
  2. Identifying opportunitiesThe key developments were analysed and concrete opportunities for Allinq were identified, such as smart grids, hydrogen networks and the expansion of the electricity grid.
  3. Report and decision matricesThe insights were brought together in a report, supplemented by decision matrices, so that Allinq can assess strategic options objectively and determine next steps.
